As part of activities to celebrate the Christmas and New Year with the less privileged in the society, the Social Development Secretariat of Federal Capital Territory Administration has doled out food items to eight selected orphanage homes across the territory.

The aim, according to the Secretariat is to bring succour to the less privileged in the society and to create awareness on the need to show love that will leave a lasting memory on the true meaning of Christmas in the hearts of the less privileged groups.

Addressing journalists after the symbolic presentation of the items to representatives of various orphanages, the Acting Secretary of Social Development Secretariat, Mrs. Irene Elegbede, stressed the need for humanitarian services to be extended to these vulnerable groups during and after Christmas, noting that the incumbent FCT Minister, Malam Muhammad Bello has over time demonstrated love for the less privileged in FCT.

Mrs. Elegbede also tasked the beneficiary homes to reciprocate government gesture by ensuring that members of their group do not constitute nuisance in the society, just as she assured that the Administration would step-up its humanitarian services in 2017.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, the principal of Vocational Rehabilitation Centre, Comrade Bala Tsoho commended the FCT Administration for assisting the less privileged during festive periods, noting that services should not be the responsibility of government alone.

Tsoho assured the FCT Administration that they sincerely appreciated the kind gesture, especially at the festive season but however called on public spirited individuals and organisations not to leave the responsibility of the less privileged to the government alone.

The recipients includeded School of the Deaf, Kuje; School for the Handicapped, Kuje; Vocational Rehabilitation Centre, Bwari and School of the Blind, Jabi.

Others are Karamajiji Disabled Community; Motherless Babies Home, Karu; Unity Orphanage Home, Gwako and the Lepers Colony, Yangoji.
