Gambia leader Jammeh says he is not taking President Buhari’s mediation

Gambia president Yahyah Jammeh has rejected all the entreaties made by the ECOWAS mediation team led by President Muhammadu Buhari that he should step down as ruler of the West African country.

Thisday reports that Jammeh told Gambia state television that Buhari’s visit alongside other heads of states from West Africa was a mere formality.

He noted that the mediators had already made up their mind that he must step down even before meeting him. For this reason among others, he said, he would not step down.

Jammeh said:

I am not a coward. My right cannot be intimidated and violated. This is my position. Nobody can deprive me of that victory except the Almighty Allah.

Already the ECOWAS meeting was a formality. Before they came, they had already said Jammeh must step down. I will not step down

BBC further quoted Jammeh further as saying in the 45-minute speech on Tuesday night that the West African leaders had violated the ECOWAS principle of non-interference.

“Who are they to tell me to leave my country?” he said during his televised speech.

I will not be intimidated by any power in this world. I want to make sure justice is done.

I’m a man of peace, but I cannot also be a coward. I am a man of peace but that does not also mean that I will not defend myself and defend my country and defend my country courageously, patriotically and win.

Recall that President Buhari was made the chief mediator in the ECOWAS team that visited Gambia to confer with Jammeh on his rejection of the election results that was won by Adama Barrow.
